Very cool. But you’d expect nothing less from the Yes Men would you?

(Heard of that bitorrent-y thing but not sure how to use it? You’ll need some software. On OSX, I personally use the excellent Transmission (which should also run on Linux) and on Windows, you should probably avail yourself of µTorrent.)

I think it’ll end of being a scifi classic for all the lack of sophistication of the plot. But really, it’s the idea behind the entire thing, that of constructing and invading dreams and extracting secrets that makes the concept so much more interesting than the actual film itself (and its very predictable final shot). So much potential to do something amazing (if not downright disturbing) with a sequel I don’t see how they could leave it alone.

Does require some thought to watch. Don’t have too much wine with dinner before going or you will lose the plot.

While the girl in this thing is amazing to watch for the sheer impressiveness of the fight choreography (a la Tony Jaa in Ong Bak originally), this thing was weird for the angle she was an autistic fighting savant and well, it just reminded me a bit too much of High Kick Girl.

The post-credit rolling choreography blooper reel looked damn painful.

Tried to take some nods from the gothic horror sensibilities of Coppola’s Dracula remake but just doesn’t quite do it for some reason.

Too bad. Swung on and missed.

Jean Reno is amazing in it though. Such an amazing actor.

The difference here is minimalist stage and costuming, a cool, unobtrusive (and heavily Frenchified soundtrack) and a vacillation between serious modern dance influences, plain fun physical comedy and acts of obvious physical difficulty, precision and effort. It’s amazingly engrossing. It’s rare I’ve heard people clap in a performance like that after almost every routine.

In a lot of ways I was heavily reminded of La la la Human Steps, Cirque du Soleil, gymnastic tumbling routines and straight out smackdown capoeira (well, a couple of moves anyway). I think I probably spent a lot of the time with my mouth slightly agape and muttering end of routine under the breath comments, because it is astounding what these performers can do.

While comparisons are often unhealthy to this and other things I’ve seen so far, I’d have to say this was the most enjoyable performance I’ve seen since getting to these shores.

Circa is out of Brisbane and has shows all over Australia I imagine (as well as touring internationally at places like the Edinburgh Festival), so if you get a chance, pony up the cash and go seem them.

But talkin’ about it [freedom] and bein’ it, that’s two different things. I mean, it’s real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace.

Kinda interesting since it plays a lot with the legend of Besoura, but there wasn’t as much capoeira in it as I would have expected for a movie about a capoeirista.

Still kinda cool. Been trying to think of what other movie it reminded me for some reason (‘cept without the Brazilian Portuguese – watched it with subtitles obviously).

Surprised I kind of missed it up until now. Definitely recommended.

You know, I have to admit I had always thought these two were fictional characters until I read up on them in wikipedia post film. Kinda interesting. Love the myths surrounding their survival in Bolivia against all reports and return to the US to live anonymously.

But it needed to be darker, more menacing and less trite and deal with the darker side of Carroll’s mind. I would have killed for something with the bite and borderline psychosis of American McGee’s Alice. In fact, someone needs to make that Alice. It won’t ever be Disney. Kinda sad that Tim Burton didn’t take it that one step further actually. I was expecting big things.

Supposedly taking place years after the original Alice has visited Wonderland in Caroll’s book, she returns as a just-proposed-to young woman who is back to fulfill the prophesy of the Frubjous Day (a la the poem Jabberwocky if you’re missing the reference).

While I fully give credit for managing to work in a Jub-jub bird, Bandersnatch and the Jabberwocky (and yet not a Snipe?), they all could have been way more frightening and less, well… mundane. Bandersnatches should always be more frumious, for example. Johnny Depp was fantastic and slightly creepy with the occasional foray into Scottish accented poetry in the flic (seriously, is there any film Depp hasn’t been in in the past decade where he hasn’t been amazing?). Oh, and kinda loved the vaporating Cheshire Cat. It played well.

You know, probably need to download the original Disney cartoon since I’m not sure I’ve ever actually seen it.

Oh, and just for note, American McGee is apparently working on a sequel to Alice in his Spicy Horse studios in Shanghai.
