Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem

This was actually a great read. WHile the book is ostensibly a detective novel, it's really about the entire idea of investigating and how the mind works. The protagonist, who interestingly and compellingly has Tourette's, guides the narrative in this fascinating tour of how the mind turns things over and looks at them in his search for his mentor's and flawed father figure's character.
So many themes woven together into what just ends up being a really great story (even if the ultimate denouement of the plot is a bit disappointing and slightly pedestrian.).
Definitely should be on your to-read list.
