A Short History of Australia by Manning Clark

OK, not exactly the most gripping explanation of the birth and growth of the Australian nation (and particularly lacking in Aboriginal history from any but the white perspective), but still a very informative summary view of the nation from its origins as (effectively) a slave labour penal colony, through the White Australia movement to its participation in the wars and up to the semi modern era.
