The confessions of a semi-successful author

Exposé on the publishing industry from a midlist author on the real deal with the publishing industry these days and why it’s not only heartrending, but dangerous. Love this quote :

It’s about the narrowing of the breadth and depth and diversity of our culture: the quieting of all but the blandest voices, the elimination of all but the safest choices. It’s about what it will mean to you if the blunt force of commerce succeeds in silencing midlist authors like me.

Course, one could suggest it’s the whining of someone who just isn’t commercially viable, but some really great points in there and some scary trends which can’t possibly be good for us. Interesting counterpoint to the self-publishing industry and the “long tail” arguments we keep hearing from people like Chris Anderson.

Just wondering how a friend I’ve got who finally finished her book is doing.
