Vancouver Wants to be an Open City

Was very happy to see this article on Vancouver wanting to move to the being an Open City.

Apparently the city council will be discussing next week adopting open data, standards and open source software for all its data and information resources.

Fantastic. We’ve been trying to move towards more open standards and software here, but its shockingly difficult in the UK where most schools have deals with Microsoft on dev tools and software and the consultant ecosystem here is very heavily MS.

Very glad to see tax dollars being spent more wisely though. I think the more cities that adopt this kind of approach the better as opportunities and things built in one place can be used by others.

Other cities like Toronto, Portland and Washington, DC have also expressed interest in doing this, but looks like Van has beat them all to the punch in terms of actually adopting an agenda motion for it.

Oh, and also, it’s a really, really nice place to live…
